Kingdom Life

Pentecost 02 – Kingdom Life / Fathers’ Day

  1. A Tale of Two Fathers
  1. Why Do Some of Us Not Experience Fatherhood?
    1. Some of us have these amazing stories & memories about our Fathers & some of us lack those things that make Fathers’ Day meaningful.
      1. Some of us can draw wisdom and insight from our fathers
      2. Some of us face life & fatherhood without those examples/models
    2. It’s about PRESENCE or NEARNESS
      1. The difference, in a father who has impact is being present!
      2. It’s not about being a rockstar, it’s about being near to your kids
    3. It seems that the same is true of our Heavenly Father as well…
  2. Why Don’t We Experience The Kingdom of God?
    1. I sense that we struggle to experience our Heavenly Father as well as struggling to experience His Kingdom; The Kingdom of Heaven
      1. The Relationships we see in Scripture
        1. We long to hear the Father’s voice like the ancients did
        2. We long to walk in the presence of Jesus & learn from him
      2. The Power we see in the Bible
        1. We long to witness miraculous physical healing & signs
        2. We long to witness hearts changing by the thousands
      3. Are the sources of grace NEAR or PRESENT in our lives?
        1. The Bible
          – do we really read it?
        2. Prayer
          – do we really spend time in it?
        3. The Sacraments
          – do we feel compelled to partake in them?
  1. Are we NEAR or PRESENT to The Kingdom?
    1. Sunday Worship
      – do we skip it?
    2. Weekday Fellowship
      – are these opportunities optional?
    3. Service to Others
      1. Speaking the Good News
        – are we quiet about it?
      2. Healing & Liberating
        – do we recognize opportunities?
  1. The Kingdom of God is NEAR & PRESENT
    1. Where Jesus is PRESENT, The Kingdom of God is NEAR
      1. Eberhard Arnold wrote: God’s kingdom is visible
wherever Jesus is. That is why the 1st Letter of John
        begins with this testimony:
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard,
which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at
        and our hands have touched—
this we proclaim concerning the Word of life.
The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it,
and we proclaim to you the eternal life,
which was with the Father and has appeared to us.
We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard,
so that you also may have fellowship with us.
And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.
Where the kingdom of God, the rule of Christ, is being proclaimed, things start happening.
    2. Where Jesus People are PRESENT, The Kingdom of God is NEAR
      1. Again, Eberhard Arnold wrote: The kingdom of God
        what do these words mean? A kingdom or realm is a political system;
it is the orderly structure of a people in the work they do and their public relationships. It is a national community held together by justice and solidarity. This is the kind of realm the prophet Isaiah had in mind when he foretold the kingdom of God (Isaiah 9:6–7). Such a realm exists only where people are living in a lasting, binding order of justice
in all relationships, a new order given to our human condition.
    3. Living the Kingdom Life
      1. Last week we talked about Living a Trinitarian Life
        1. We are Created in the Image of Other-Oriented Love
        2. We are Created to be PRESENT in Community Together
      2. This week we see that the Kingdom Life continues in that same theme
        1. Jesus goes himself, then he sends the 12, and he sends the 72
        2. Where Jesus is and where he sends his messengers,
The Kingdom is NEAR and PRESENT
      3. We CAN Experience The Kingdom of God; NEAR & PRESENT to us!
        1. Share the Good News of the Gospel
        2. Heal the Sick
        3. Liberate Those in Bondage
        4. Feed the Hungry
        5. Welcome the Orphan and the Stranger
        6. Protect the Vulnerable
        7. Stay connected to the Body, the Fellowship & the Means of Grace
  1. Sending – We are a Sent People; We are Kingdom Messengers
    1. See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves.
    2. The Empire sends out wolves to seek and destroy, to devour the weak
    3. The Kingdom sends out sheep with the Good News of new life;
meek, merciful, mourning, pure in heart peacemakers who welcome in the widows, orphans, & strangers; the least of these whoever they are.
    4. We are the children of a good Father who longs for us to be NEAR
    5. We are brothers & sisters; heirs of a PRESENT & Future Kingdom.
    6. Let the Goodness & Love of our Heavenly Father:
Embrace us, Grace us, & Send us…that we may all live Kingdom Life
