Living Bread & Leftover Turkey 02

  1. Is Anyone Sick of Turkey Leftovers Yet?
    1. How do you repackage your turkey leftovers to serve them again?
    2. How do we repackage our faith leftovers to serve them again?
  2. Sometimes our Faith Feels a Bit Like Dry Leftovers
    1. The World/Our Community Isn’t Interested in our dry leftovers
      1. Our dry legalism is being rejected by young people (Millenials)
      2. It’s becoming more common to claim “no faith affiliation” (Nones)
    2. Sometimes we’re not even interested in our own dry leftovers
      1. Life(decades)long members struggle to love their church
      2. The living bread dries out & isn’t kept fresh, existing on memories
    3. But we’ve built an empire around dry leftovers; turkey carcass castles
      1. Evangelical Empire Building reflects Jesus less & less in the world
      2. The American Church feels more like an old dried out carcass
    1. Pharisees are Still Choking Down Leftover Turkey
      1. The Pharisees perfected perfectionism according to The Law
        1. Jesus said: Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
For you tithe mint, dill, and cummin, and have neglected the
weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. It is these
you ought to have practiced without neglecting the others.
          Matt. 23:23
        2. Then the Lord [Jesus] said to him, “Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. You fools! Luke 11:39-40
        3. He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded others with contempt: Luke 11:18
      2. The Prophets pointed out their proclivity for legalism over mercy
        1. For I desire mercy, not sacrifice. I want you to know me more than I want burnt offerings. Hosea 6:6
        2. He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8
      3. In the presence of The Word (Jesus) they clung to The Word (Torah)
  3. Jesus is the Bread of Heaven; the Bread of Life
    1. Consider this: The Word (Scripture) points to THE WORD (Jesus)
      1. We aren’t supposed to worship Scripture. We worship Jesus
      2. Jesus trades dry lifeless leftovers for fresh eternal life-giving bread!
    2. Even the prophets pointed out how the turkey leftovers led to lethargy!
    3. Like a Thanksgiving Feast, Jesus brings (& is) the fresh Bread of Heaven!
      1. I came that you may have life, and have it abundantly. John 10:10
      2. I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry
  4. Stop Choking Down Dry Leftover Turkey
    1. Jesus & the Prophets before him corrected the dry keepers of the law
    2. Paul had to corrected Peter & the Judaizers for turning back to the law
    3. Let’s not repeat the mistakes of the Pharisees/Law Keepers ourselves by turning the Bread of Heaven into dry turkey leftovers (or crutons)
  5. Trade Those Dry Turkey Leftovers for Fresh Bread!
    1. Jesus didn’t cross from heaven & submit himself to death on the cross so we could go on like Pharisees choking down dry legalistic leftovers
    2. Remember Our Eternal Hope in the life-giving Bread of Heaven (Jesus)
      “O taste and see that the Lord is good;
happy are those who take refuge in him.” – Psalm 34:8
