  2. It’s About Kingdom, Not Empire – Jesus, not Caesar
    1. Jesus is humble where Caesar is proud.
      1. Being other-oriented is counter-cultural resistance in the face of a selfish and prideful me-oriented consumerist culture
      2. Jesus shows us a stark contrast of leadership that humbly bows,
        as Caesar refuses to bow
    2. Jesus serves others where Caesar demands to be served
      1. Service is subversive in the face of Empire
      2. Jesus shows us a stark contrast in the God of the universe serving the lowly among us, as Caesar demands privilege & obeisance.
    3. Jesus abdicated his privilege as very God in order to submit & serve
  3. Service is a Major Theme in Scripture – Service is Love in Action
    1. Our Philippians reading: Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit,
but in humility regard others as better than yourselves.
Let each of you look not to your own interests,
but to the interests of others.
Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus
    2. Our Gospel reading: So if I, your Lord & teacher, have washed your feet,
you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
For I have set you an example,
that you also should do as I have done to you.
    3. Servant, service & serve occur over 1000 times in the Bible. (x2 as love)
    4. Even the Final Judgment in Matthew 25 is described through service:
‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
  4. Service is a Major Theme in our Congregation – Doing 4 Others
    1. I hear over & over: SERVICE is a main focus of our congregational life
    2. You can see it in our bulletin insert: Look at all those names!
    3. You can see it in the way we connect with our community
    4. Service & the love that births it should be a major theme in Christianity
  5. There is a Secret in Serving – Joy For Those Who Serve Others
    1. Those who serve are blessed through their service to others
    2. Others get to see the Gospel through our service to them
    3. The Kingdom is spread abroad by life-giving service to others
    4. Let us be blessed & inspired in the Kingdom work we’re called to!
