Peace – Prayer – Joy – Love

That Escalated Quickly!

  1. In The Words Of Ron Burgundy: “Boy, That Escalated Quickly.”
    1. What a fast transition from amazement to rage.
    1. They went from speaking well of Jesus to attempting to murder him.
    1. Does it seem unclear why there’s such a rapid and dramatic change?
  2. When The Crowd Turned Into A Mob, & Why They Turned.
    1. They identified Jesus w/the familiarity of a local boy & put him in a box.
      1. Joseph’s son, the carpenter. In this case maybe not limiting what he can do but instead assuming privileged status by familiarity.
      1. They seemed to expect Jesus would treat them as well, or better than he had those whom he’d healed & taught in Capernaum.
    1. They expected Jesus to entertain them with miracles, healing & wisdom.
      1. They said, “Look, Jesus, we appreciate your mission to the poor, but we’re your kin, we go way back together, what will you do for us?”
      1. It is a corruption of the “chosen people” status that created such a monster in the hearts of the people of Israel. They expected special privilege status as recipients of all God’s blessings, but God had said all along (all the way back to Genesis): Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
    1. Jesus was on to them & brought up the prophets to those outside Israel.
      1. Elijah & the famine – widow @ Zarephath in Sidon
      1. Elisha & the sickness – Naaman the Syrian
  3. The Gospel Is About More Than Our Comfort/Entertainment
    1. Jesus just read his mission statement from the scroll of Isaiah.
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
    1. The Gospel is for the poor, the captives, the blind, & the oppressed;
The Gospel is life for a whole world captive to death; hope for all of us!
    1. They expected that it would be JUST for them; the privileged & chosen.
  4. God Is Love. The Gospel Is Love. Love Is Other-oriented.
    1. That famous favorite passage from 1 Cor.13 that describes what love is.
Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude.
It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.
    1. Love is patient & giving. Love is not controlling. Love is other-oriented.
    1. God is love. So 1 Cor. 13 is a powerful description of God’s character.
  5. Chose This Day. Are You Of The Poor Or The Privileged?
    1. The crowd turned from speaking well & amazement to murderous rage when Jesus wouldn’t entertain them & he dared to include others.
    1. In the face of the Gospel, we are given the same choice:
      1. Will we open ourselves to the other & share the Gospel love/life?
      1. Will we be resentful in surrendering our preferences & privilege?
    1. Let us recognize in our hearts today what they failed to recognize then: We’re chosen/blessed so that we can be an invitation/blessing to others!
