Peace – Prayer – Joy – Love
UofM vs MSU

There Can Be Only One

  1. Always Striving To Be First
    1. This ad paid for by James & John for right & left hand chairs committee.
    2. Reminding me again of this dreaded & anxious political election season.
    3. Spartans & Wolverines competing to win (& we claim their victory).
    4. Reminds me of the old movie “Highlander” There can be only one!
  2. Missing Out On Unity
    1. Here are these Immortals building selfish lives & killing each other.
    2. UM vs. MSU competitions are mostly friendly in their proper place.
    3. James & John’s wanting to be first divided the Disciples. Not cool!
    4. Our political, nationalistic & racial “first-ness”becomes hateful & violent
  3. Flipping Our Rankings On Their Head
    1. Wonderful experience the last couple of days; unity+forgiveness=peace
      1. Meeting Pardeep & Arno and their story of violence & forgiveness.
      2. Finding unity in our human sameness & dignity in human equality.
    2. Jesus “flips the script”on them saying the 1stmust be last & servant of all.
    3. I want to believe that the other Disciples objected to James & John in realizing, That’s not how this works! I hope they object in that theyGet It.
    4. Paul expands in his letter to the Galatians, “There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus.”
  4. Liberation In Recognizing The True First One
    1. Realizing that “God is God, and I am not.”Frees us from this competition.
    2. I think Job recognizes this after his friendscompeted to be 1st
    3. Job gets a dressing downfrom God reminding him of who is in charge.
    4. I sense PEACE in this recognizing of God’s first-ness & sovereignty.
  5. Liberated From Our Own Hubris & Hatred
    1. Like Job, I sense that our appropriate response to God’s sovereignty is, “I am unworthy—how can I reply to you? I put my hand over my mouth.
I spoke once, but I have no answer—twice, but I will say no more.”
    2. Like the Disciples, who finally got it, our appropriate action is adopting the heart of a servant & putting the others before ourselves.
    3. Like the Galatians, we must learn to cast off our rankings & instead embrace unity & equality with one another under God’s sovereignty.
    4. Like my new friends, Arno & Pardeep, we must cast off our hubris & hatred so we can recognize the light; the image of God in each other.
