This Is My Family

  1. He Has A Demon – There’s Something Wrong With Him
    1. Following Jesus involves sacrifice:
      “They could not even eat.”
“just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve,
and to give his life a ransom for many.”
      Matthew 20:28
    2. Following Jesus involves rejection:
“He has gone out of his mind.”
“But first he must endure much suffering
and be rejected by this generation.”
      Luke 17:25
    3. Following Jesus involves condemnation:
“By the ruler of the demons he casts out demons.”
      “If the world hates you,
be aware that it hated me before it hated you.”
      John 15:18
  2. Not An Easy Passage To Tackle This Week
    1. So many compelling topics/questions in one passage.
      1. The accusation that Jesus is controlled by/working for a demon
      2. The expectation of sacrifice and rejection in following Jesus
      3. The fear of the unforgivable sin: Blaspheming the Holy Spirit
      4. The challenge of who our family is; blood vs. spirit
    2. The challenge of being the chief follower, the shepherd of the flock.
      1. Not exempt from the message I am being prepared to bring.
      2. I go through the same trials that everyone else does.
      3. I struggle w/the same humanity, feelings, & weaknesses as you all
    3. This hit really close to home this week and challenged me personally.
  3. Whoever Does The Will Of God Is My Family
    1. I sense that the clue to the tension we feel is in Jesus’ words:
“Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.”
    2. Peace comes in recognizing the divine love that embraces us as family;
children of Abba, siblings of Christ & coheirs of an eternal kingdom.
    3. Peace comes in recognizing the human love that unites us as one family; in recognizing the Imago Dei in each of us in all our glorious diversity.
  4. This Is My Family
    1. Being a pastor-shepherd; a public figure, means having a target on you.
    2. Unfortunately, it means that my family has targets on them too.
    3. I thought maybe we should get to know my family:
      1. Katie
      2. Jonathan
      3. Thomas
      4. Claire
      5. Megan
      6. Jason (me)
  5. This Is My Family
    1. Being a faith family w/this much potential, means having a target on us.
    2. Taking up God’s mission, means having a target on us all the more.
    3. Let us be careful not to fall into division.
      1. Remember Jesus’ words, “If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. & if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand.”
      2. & our Corinthians text, For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure”
    4. Let us be encouraged by God’s unlimited love for us & power to win!
      1. It is no small comfort in our Gospel text today:
And looking at those who sat around him, he said,
“Here are my mother and my brothers!
Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.”
      2. It is no small encouragement in our Epistle reading today:
For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us
for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure …
For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
      3. It is no small comfort that we read in Romans 8:
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
      4. And no small exhortation in Galatians 3: for in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith. As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.
      5. And finally from 1 John 3: See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. … Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is.
