2018 Service & Picnic @ Parsonage

What Are You Hungry For?

  1. Which Food Are You Hungry For This Morning?
    1. There’s worship & the Word here, but there’s potluck waiting for us.
    2. Today we get both spiritual ‘soul’ food and physical stomach food.
    3. We often pass on healthy to crave saccharine sweet or to “get salty”.
  2. Junk Food & Junk Theology Creates Unhealthy People
    1. Saccharine sweet leaves us lethargic and numb to our Kingdom mission.
    2. Self-righteous “Salty” legalism leaves us unChristlike & rightly rejected.
    3. Fatty gnostic code-breaking robs our time & attention for Gospel work.
  3. The Bread Of Life Liberates Us From Junk Food Slavery
    1. Jesus answered them,“Do not complain among yourselves.” we reject him!
    2. The Pharisees were addicted to Junk Food Religion & their Empire.
    3. Jesus embodies “pure religion” so that we learn & then can follow him.
James 1:27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.– I’ll say it again & again, it really is that simple.
  4. We Hunger For The Word w/Flesh On
    1. Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life.
    2. As our physical bodies hunger for true nutrition, so do our spirits/souls.
    3. Jesus promises us the bread of life & embodies it himself. He is the life!
  5. Our Neighbors Hunger For The Word w/Flesh On
    1. Therefore be imitators of God… and live in love, as Christ loved us…
    2. We are called & sent out by Christ Jesus to be him to our neighbors.
    3. We’ll be known as his by our love for one another & for our neighbors But how do we do that? How do we embody life and pure religion?
    4. John Pavlovitzhas well written: People don’t need to be dazzled with heavily foot-noted eschatological frameworks and complex theological systems. Talk to them plainly about love and joy and forgiveness and death and peace and God, and they’ll be all ears. Let them hear the unfiltered words of Jesus and people will listen.
    5. Brad Jerzakhas well said: Any kind of righteousness, justice, or holiness that’s not love is not God. The holiness, righteousness, and justice that is not love is what crucified Jesus. It’s called the Pharisee spirit.
    6. Finally as we begin to move toward all that delicious food that you all prepared for our potluck; our agape meal, David Johnstonwell writes: Jesus is the bread of life for he comes to teach us again that the world is given to us as communion with God. Even food is meant to be communion with God, a place where God meets us in our primal desire. That is why Jesus gives us the sacrament of communion. For in communion, we learn to use the gifts of God’s creation rightly… & through the sacrament of the Eucharist we encounter the risen Christ, who has given us the bread of life that is his flesh. Through the Eucharist [& also our agape meal today], we receive the world as God’s gift as a means of communion with God through Christ.
